Family and Business: Navigating the Holidays as a Mompreneur

December 13, 20243 min read

Hey mama, do you ever find that your roles as a mom and an entrepreneur clash during the holidays? It’s easy to feel stretched too thin, trying to meet business deadlines while still creating memorable moments for your family. The good news is, you don’t have to choose one over the other. Today, I want to share some strategies to bring harmony between your family and business during the holidays, so you can enjoy both without feeling guilt or overwhelm.

Communication Is Key

The first step in navigating the holiday season is communicating your business needs with your family. Often, we get frustrated trying to work in a bustling house because we haven’t communicated clearly. Here’s a couple of things you can do:

  • Schedule a Family Meeting: Take some time, maybe 15-20 minutes, to explain your business commitments for the holidays. A simple explanation of how your work contributes to the family—not just in financial terms but in terms of shared benefits—can foster understanding.

  • Set Clear Boundaries: Create a visible schedule or use a “mom at work” sign to let everyone know when you’ll be working and when you’re available for family time. This builds trust and lets your family know when they can count on you being present with them.

  • Be Transparent: Explain why your tasks are important and how they impact the family. This understanding can turn family members into your biggest cheerleaders.

Involve Your Kids

Involving your kids in your entrepreneurial journey can make them feel a part of your business while taking some of the load off your shoulders.

  • Age-Appropriate Tasks: Give younger kids fun, hands-on tasks like packing orders, or let older kids assist in more meaningful ways like creating simple graphics or helping with inventory.

  • Reward Their Efforts: Celebrate their contributions with praise and small rewards. This encourages them and gives them a sense of pride in their work.

Learn When to Pause or Pivot

Recognizing when to pause your business activities to enjoy family celebrations is critical.

  • Identify Non-Negotiables: Determine which family traditions or events are most important to you and schedule them in advance. Treat these moments like non-negotiable appointments on your calendar.

  • Plan Ahead: Use tools like Trello or Asana to batch and organize tasks, allowing you to pause work for important family events.

  • Be Flexible: Life happens. If unexpected family moments arise, evaluate how you can pivot without major repercussions, and give yourself grace in doing so.

Wrap-up

Before wrapping up, I challenge you to think about one area where you can set a boundary or ask for help this holiday season. Whether it’s asking a spouse to handle dinner one night or opting for store-bought cookies, give yourself the gift of support. You don’t have to do it all alone.

Remember, the holidays aren’t about perfection; they’re about connection. While your family may not remember the perfectly crafted email campaign, they will treasure the memories made together. If these tips resonate with you, or if you had any “aha” moments, share your thoughts or ideas that you’d like to implement this season.
